Golf club raffle benefits cat groups

Inspired by the success of a raffle in May for a mountain bike she donated to help two area cat rescue groups, Gail Linda Kopp is holding another raffle to help these same groups.

This time Kopp is donating a Callaway Big Bertha golf club.

Kopp, who is the owner of Affordable Jewelry, Coins & Loans in Wickliffe, paid for the item, which is valued at $450.

The drawing will take place at 10:30 a.m. July 29 at the store, 30133 Euclid Ave.

Tickets cost $1 each and the golf club can be viewed at the store prior to the raffle.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

All money raised from the raffle will be divided between the nonprofit organizations Save Our Strays, based in Euclid, and Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary, located in Chester Township.

For more information, call Affordable Jewelry, Coins & Loans at 440-944-8000.

Macaques take photos of themselves

This story from The Guardian is incredible!

Photographer David Slater was in a national park in Indonesia and befriended some macaques. After setting up his camera on a tripod, he left for a few moments, and returned to find the macaques taking photos.

I love that the animals seemingly posed for the photos. Did they understand the purpose of the camera?

Hungry dogs

I've made this plea before, but if you can spare a few bucks, the folks at the Geauga County Dog Warden's office could sure use the money to buy dog food.

There are about 20 dogs at the shelter at any given time, and they are always in need of food.

The shelter can use canned or dry dog food.

You can drop off food to the shelter at 12513 Merritt Road in Claridon Township.

Monetary donations can be sent to the above address. The ZIP code is 44024.

For more information, call 440-286-8135.

Animal Crackers: At the zoo!

I went to the zoo over the holiday weekend and shot a few videos to share.

African Elephant Crossing at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo: A look at the female elephants in the five-acre African Elephant Crossing at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Moshi, the most independent of the herd, needed some coaxing to cross from one side to the other. The African Elephant Crossing opened in May.

Baboons look for food at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo: The hamadryas baboons explore their habitat for food at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The zookeepers hid their food in boxes and bags for them to look through to find the food.

Animals at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo: Take a look at some of the animals you might see at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. This video includes swans and cygnets (baby swans), a joey (baby kangaroo), a tortoise, sulfer crested cockatoos, camels, a zebra, a giraffe, a polar bear and a spectacled bear.
