Peanut butter, please

The dogs at the Geauga County Dog Warden shelter are pretty darn smart.

They have figured out when pills are hidden in hot dogs.

So to make sure the dogs get their medication, officials are hiding pills in peanut butter.

The shelter could use donations of peanut butter.

Felicity needs a home

This is Felicity, a beautiful 9-year-old female who is available for adoption at Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village, 15463 Chillicothe Road, Russell Township.

Felicity wants nothing more than a quiet home to live in.

She can be a tad shy and is frightened by young children and loud noises, so a calm home is where she will feel comfortable and show her true colors, shelter officials said.

So the cat is out of the bag (an expression I've never really cared for).

Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona is really Roberto Hernandez Heredia.

At least that's what his homeland, the Dominican Republic, is saying.

Top it off, he's really 31 years old and not 28.

Next, we'll find out he's a lefty and not even a pitcher.

Oh wait, we kind of figured out the latter last season.

Harley needs a home

This is Harley, a 10-year-old Australian shepherd mix available for adoption at Lake Humane Society, 7564 Tyler Blvd., Mentor.

According to shelter officials, Harley is a very sweet boy with a laid-back personality.

I know that sometimes I give dogs a hard time.

They are dogs, for God's sake.

But I must tip my hat (even if I don't have one) to Ole.

This Welsh corgi was feared dead in an avalanche Saturday that killed his owner in Montana.

But, somehow the dog showed up four days later at the Montana motel where his owners had stayed the night before going skiing.

How he survived the avalanche and made his way back is a story that only Ole knows for sure.

One thing is certain, even in tragedy, Ole managed to provide a glimmer of hope.

Animals, even dogs, never cease to amaze.

Pet Tails: An Introduction

You meet someone new and eventually as part of the ice breaking conversation, the question of whether you are a ‘cat person’ or a ‘dog person’ is sure to come up.

Well, I’m Caitlin, and I’m a zoo person.

Currently, my little exhibit has dwindled down to my 12-year-old dog Shadow, and her brothers, Amigo and Pal (betta fish who share brotherly love from neighboring tanks).

I’ve had a host of pets over the years, which included my best friend of a cat Kiki, who died two years ago of cancer, and three rats: Rufus, Chester and Felix (two of which turned out to be females after their rather masculine names were chosen).

You may be thinking, rats?! But I assure you that these little fur balls are sweet pets and very intelligent. My boyfriend’s bulldog doesn’t know his own name, but these rats would come to me when called.

Speaking of the bulldog… Gus is sure to bring some interesting stories to this blog.

But let’s not forget Buddy, my betta fish who inspired the names for the newbie’s, and Chomper my little African Dwarf frog.

There were more childhood pets too, with more fish than I can count and a hamster who moved with me from Florida.

As I’m sure anyone who reads this blog already knows, pets provide such a wonderful addition to life that comes in the form of joy, support and comfort.

I always dreaded the day that Kiki would pass, like any owner would, but I thought I’d be immobile for days. She was my best friend for the majority of my life, after all. We picked her up as a kitten when I was seven years old.

She was a trooper, however, surviving renal kidney failure when she was just seven or eight years old. She lived a long and happy life, being carted around in a stroller during my younger years, hanging out in laundry baskets and always willing to help out with (or sit on top of) my homework.

I’d like to bring you memories of these pets’ antics as they come, as well as share some of the day-to-day goofball behavior of the current family members.

The you-know-what has hit the proverbial fan at the Palmer household.

Seems the humans figured out a I got a hold of their credit card.

They were tipped off when the UPS guy delivered 1,000 of those furry mouse toys to the house the other day.

I love eBay.

Now it seems I am grounded.

They took away my iPad, iPod, Smartphone and Kindle, and disconnected my Twitter and Facebook accounts.

I'm no longer LinkedIn, either.

The best part of all?

They cannot return the toys because they have cat spit on them.

New Year's resolutions for 2012:

The humans continue to serve me Fancy Fest and gourmet Friskies twice a day (Crystal dish is optional).

The bedroom window curtain remains slightly open so the sunbeam reaches the spot on bed where I am sleeping.

The annoying sister cat becomes less annoying.

The birds, squirrels, geese, deer and neighbor cat continue to humor me with their antics as I watch from the comforts of my warm home.

What's that you said?

These are supposed to be resolutions I'm making?

Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary seeks donations

The director, board members and volunteers at the mostly cageless Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary in Chester Township — none of whom are paid a salary — hope that people in the community will be generous to the sanctuary’s cats during this time of holiday cheer.

“Even though more than a year has passed since a devastating fire at Happy Tails, the financial challenges are still great,” said Jeanne Bones, the sanctuary’s founder and director.

“We are grateful to people in our community for their contributions that enabled us to keep the sanctuary functioning even during our darkest hours following the fire. Many of our resources are greatly depleted, however, so we hope the holiday season will inspire people to make donations to help us continue to provide heat in the buildings, cat food, kitty litter, and veterinary care.”

Since 1982, Happy Tails has provided food, shelter, and other care for many previously neglected, abandoned and abused cats.

Some of the cats are adoptable, but a number of them are not because of their ages, disabilities or temperaments.

Bones said some of the cats are feral or semi-feral and will not ever be suitable as house pets, so they will probably spend the rest of their lives at the sanctuary.

The sanctuary is a nonprofit, charitable organization, and donations are tax-deductible. Contributions can be sent to: Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary, P.O. Box 581, Chesterland, OH 44026.

Geauga Humane Society's Rescue Village in Russell Township wants its animals to go Ho-Ho-Home for the Holidays.

The shelter is celebrating the holidays by lowering its adoption fees by 1/2 for cats and kittens and spotlight dogs to just $50.

The price reduction will last all December.

Tips on pet safety for the holidays

I recently received a news release with tips from small animal veterinarian Dr. Jessica Vogelsang, the founder of Pawcurious.com. Expert tips for pet safety during the holidays

Ensure you’re prepared if your pet gets out

With all the holiday visitors and festivities, it’s easy for stressed pets to slip out the door or backyard. Be sure your pet has its tags and microchips updated with your current address and phone number.
Consider a GPS product like Tagg – The Pet Tracker to calm your fears. Tagg attaches to your pet's collar and will send you an alert if your pet does slip out, and then allows you to track your pet’s location in real time so you can pick him up and bring him home!

Be aware of holiday fragrances

Candles are a fire and burn risk, of course. Many owners turn to scented potpourri, thinking it is a safer option, but it is extremely caustic when ingested and can cause esophageal ulcers.

Mind the string

Cats love ribbons, string and tinsel. But when ingested, they can lead to a painful condition called "string foreign body" and can actually perforate the intestine.

Keep an eye on the holiday treats

Although everyone knows chocolate is toxic, the most common reason pets wind up in the ER is because they ingested too much fatty food and gave themselves an upset stomach or pancreatitis. If you have a relative who insists on feeding the pet treats, keep a bowl of special pet-friendly holiday treats nearby and ask them to feed your pet those instead of pieces of sausage!

Know where the emergency vet is located

If your pet has an emergency, you can't call 911. The last thing you want to have to do in that situation is look up directions to the vet clinic when you're stressed and in a hurry! Know their phone number and map out the location ahead of time.

I recently received a news release with tips for managing a pet's health and diet during the holiday season, and I thought now while we're planning for the holidays might be a good time to pass along the advice. So read the news release below, and keep your pet's health and diet in mind when you're eating over the holidays.

Though the holiday food is tempting, be mindful of what you feed your pet!
SEAACA provides fun and helpful tips to help you manage your pet's health and diet during the holiday season

The holidays are a time to share wonderful meals with family and friends. For pets, however, the risk of overfeeding and eating dangerous food items during the holiday season can pose significant health risks. From Thanksgiving to New Year's and beyond, the food keeps coming and the guests revel, but the pets can suffer. To help resolve this holiday dilemma, Southeast Area Animal Control Authority has created a list of tips to help pet owners enjoy their holiday meals while maintaining their pet’s health and welfare.

Don't supersize them. Please do not feed your pet human food. But, if you do, avoid giving large amounts of cooked turkey or ham during the holidays. Humans are much larger and heavier than dogs and cats and can handle bigger food servings; our pets cannot. During the holidays, it’s very easy to forget this and overfeed pets, thus upsetting their digestive system and compromising their health. Should you feed your pet human food, also avoid food that has been out of the refrigerator for a long period of time. Pets need to be protected against food that is undercooked or subject to spoilage because of lack of refrigeration.
Watch the richness. Holiday food can be filled with spices and seasonings, which can cause health problems in pets. Try to keep you pets on their regular schedule with their regular food.
Ain't to proud to beg. As pets become accustomed to human food, they can learn irritating begging habits that can be rude to family members and guests during mealtimes. Try to keep pet meals in a separate room with designated pet food rather than human leftovers.
No bones about it. Do not feed pets bones, particularly chicken, turkey and other poultry bones. Bones can break apart cause intestinal pain, and sometimes choking, in pets.
Sweet are not treats. Candy and highly sugary items can wreak havoc on a pet's diet. Also, candy wrappers can be eaten by dogs and cats and can result in choking or digestive pain.
Beware of non-edibles. During the hustle and bustle of holiday meals, it's easy to lose track of pets. Make sure you keep an eye on them so that they're not eating non-edible items, such as food packaging or gift wrap, that might have fallen to the floor or left somewhere in the home.
Treat dogs and cats as individuals. If you have both dogs and cats, remember that they might have different dietary preferences, and that they need different portion sizes. Use discretion and don’t hand out holiday leftovers blindly.

"Holidays meals are special family moments, but they can be a problem for pets," noted SEAACA Executive Director, Dan Morrison. "If we remember to prevent overfeeding and to use discretion when giving pets meals during this festive season, everyone will benefit," he added.

Geauga County Dog Warden needs donations

The Geauga County Dog Warden is in need of a few items.

The warden is asking for canned dog food, puppy food and soft treats (but not those from China). The warden also needs bleach and paper towels.

Additionally, the warden has a litter of very young puppies that need a home.

Holiday pet food drive through area dental offices

This month, area dental offices are collecting non-perishable pet food items and supplies to support area animal shelters. To find out which offices are participating or to make a donation, call Margie Carr at Dr. Gary Woznicki's office at 216-731-7555.

Apparently, humans aren't the only ones who are making donations to the pet food drive this month.

Taz, a former shelter dog, visited the Geauga County Dog Warden at 12513 Merritt Road in Chardon, with Carr, who is his owner. Deputy Wardens Cindy Sedivy and Andrea Ballas are part of the shelter staff.

Project Santa Paws

Ohio Advocates for Companion Animals is helping out our four-legged friends this holiday season.

The group is collecting pet food (unopened and unexpired), treats and toys, cat litter, collars and leashes, blankets and beds, and cleaning supplies, which will be donated to the Emergency Assistance Center Food Pantry and City of Cleveland Kennel.

Drop off donations through Dec. 17 at one of the following locations:

A Balancing Touch Wellness Studio, 32417 Vine St., Willowick, OH 44095, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday (closed Sunday and Monday)

OA4CA will deliver food donations to the Emergency Assistance Center food pantry at 1 p.m. Dec. 19, and other items will be delivered by Santa to the City of Cleveland Kennel at 1 p.m. Dec. 22.

On OA4CA's event page for Project Santa Paws, the group says donations will help families who have had to give up pets during the difficult economic time, and will help homeless animals in the area.

Caroline's Kids selling tickets for $1,000 raffle

Tickets are $5 each or six for $25. Download the raffle tickets to enter into the drawing, which will take place Jan. 27.

All proceeds from both raffles go directly to the care of the 250 cats at the no-kill, care-for-life sanctuary.

'Sammy in the Sky' aims to help kids cope with loss of a pet

If you were young when a family pet died - or you lost a family pet when your children were young - then you know the pain and confusion kids can go through with the loss of a pet.

Journalist Barbara Walsh tackles that topic in a new book, "Sammy in the Sky." The book includes illustrations by Jamie Wyeth.

David Sharp of The Associated Press wrote about "Sammy in the Sky" in a feature story this weekend. Walsh tells him that agents and publishers were hesitant to publish the book, which is now in its third printing. And, it's my favorite,.

For some reason the humans put a tree in the living room, decorate it with lights and hang items that break when I paw at them.

This has to be the greatest time of the year.

Ever sleep under a Christmas tree? (Doesn't count when you had a bit too much eggnog and rum and ended up on the tree.)

Sleeping under the tree is like being in the wild with all the comforts of home.

It's also fun to get up, stretch and then shake the tree.

The look on the humans' faces is priceless.

Geauga Humane Society gives Humanitarian Award

The Geauga Humane Society recently presented its Humanitarian Award to Gal Russo.

From a news release:

The Geauga Humane Society had its 2011 Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Oct. 28. Every year Geauga Humane bestows its coveted Humanitarian Award to someone who has gone above and beyond to demonstrate compassion toward animals.
This year's recipient was Gal Russo. She is a long-time Rescue Village volunteer who is dedicated to saving lives. From dog walking, to donation portions of her art sales, to events, she is a champion for animals, and a well-deserved recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year award.

Art from the Heart benefits Rescue Village

A fundraiser featuring hand-crafted artisan gifts for holiday giving will help out Geauga Humane Society's Rescue Village.

Art from the Heart, presented by Muddy Paw Wines, will be at Freedom Design Kitchen & Bath, 21 N. Franklin St., Chagrin Falls, and will feature work from more than a dozen artists.

Opening night will be 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 9, and will include an art sale, artist raffle, hor d'oeurves, wine tasting and adoptable animals. The art sale and adoptable animals will return from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 10.

Reasons to be thankful as Thanksgiving Day approaches:

I'm not a turkey, and therefore will not end up on your dinner table, unless I feel like jumping up there.

I'm not a dog. Enough said.

I'm a cat. Enough said.

My owners feed me Fancy Fest even if it is sans the crystal bowl.

Everything in the house is at my disposal and for my pleasure (with the exception of the vacuum cleaner).

The fact that I can purr and humans still haven't figured out how cats make that sound.

I can watch it snow from the comfort of the couch.

I can torment the other cat in the house. A hiss, spit and growl are always good reminders of who is in charge.

I can do catnip and not get busted.

I can have the cat crazies and not have to see a shrink.

I am truly one thankful cat.

Geauga Humane Society's Snow Melter at the Shelter

Do your animal-loving 'tweens have any plans for winter break? If you're looking for a fun activity with which they can get involved, check out Geauga Humane Society's Snow Melter at the Shelter camp.

The two-day, hands-on camp is for kids ages 9 to 11, and runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 27 and 28. During the camp, the youths will make dog treats, cat and dog toys, meet shelter animals, and make wild bird feeders that will hang in the woods near the shelter and behind the barn.

Snow Melter at the Shelter is $65 for the two days, and lunch is included.

Registration is limited to 12 campers, so don't delay if your kids want to take part in the camp.

Caroline's Kids Tree of Love

Caroline's Kids Pet Rescue wants you to remember your pets and sanctuary cats this holiday season with its Tree of Love.

The Tree of Love, located at the cat sanctuary at 7394 Morley Road in Concord Township, helps pet owners honor and remember their furry friends. Lights can be purchased for the tree for $13 each: white lights are to remember a pet, and colored lights are to honor a pet.

The tree lighting will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 4, but you do not have to be present at the lighting to purchase a light.

Download the Tree of Love brochure to purchase lights or make a donation, or stop by the sanctuary. Daily hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Adopt a senior pet

Everybody loves a kitten or puppy, but hey, senior cats and dogs need love and a home, too.

Stanford, a sweet 5-year-old male, is available for adoption.

In honor of Adopt-A-Senior Pet Month, Lake Humane Society has lowered adoption fees for some special "senior" cats and dogs.

The adoption fee on select senior cats has been reduced to $20. All cats have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, received a veterinary examination, have been FeLV, FIV and heartworm tested, received deworming, flea treatment, and are up to date on initial vaccines.

Tosh, a 9-year-old Chocolate Lab mix, is available for adoption.

Adoption fee on select senior dogs has been reduced by $20, making their adoption fee $50. A dog license is required at the time of adoption and costs $15.75.

All dogs have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, received a veterinary examination, have been heartworm tested and are up to date on vaccinations.

Golf club raffle to benefit two nonprofit cat rescue groups

For the second time, a raffle winner of a Callaway "Big Bertha" golf club valued at $450 returned the prize for "re-raffling" to raise more money for the Chester Township-based Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary and the Euclid-based Save Our Strays nonprofit cat rescue organizations, according to a news release.

The final drawing will be at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.

All previously purchased tickets will be in the drawing and eligible to win the club, which was donated by Gail Linda Kopp, owner of Affordable Jewelry, Coins & Loans in Wickliffe. The re-drawing will be at the store, 30133 Euclid Ave. Tickets are $1 each, and the golf club can be viewed at the store.

Do know what it's like sitting in room full of smelly dogs?

I had to go to the vets office recently because one of the three teeth I have left is on the way out.

I sat in my carrier waiting for my turn in a room overrun by cannines.

They are so nosey.

They all walk around and smell each other's butts. How disgusting.

One dog, however, did have enough class to say he reads my blog weekly. There is hope afterall.

Anyways, the tooth is still hanging in there, and

now I have to take a half of a baby aspirin every three days for the pain.

Catnip would be a better remedy, but what do humans know?

Caroline's Kids hosts dinner/auction

Caroline's Kids Cat Rescue will be having a dinner/auction from 6 to 11 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Kirtlander Party Center, 9270 Chillicothe Road, Kirtland.

Proceeds will benefit the 260 cats in the no-kill, free-roam sanctuary in Concord Township. Cost is $40 per person ($17 is tax-deductible) in advance by Oct 29.

Pet Loss Support Group meetings resume

Animal Hospital Inc. and Patty DeJohn of DeJohn Pet Services have brought back the Pet Loss Support Group:

The loss of a pet can be a very difficult time to work through and often people to not give themselves permission to grieve for an animal with which they have spent a very significant part of their lives.

The group meets in the Animal Hospital Inc. Conference room on the third Thursday of every month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Meeting dates for the rest of the year are Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15.

"Cold Noses, Warm Hearts" Fur Ball 2011

The Cleveland Animal Protective League is hosting its annual gala fundraiser "Cold Noses, Warm Hearts," Fur Ball 2011, at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the InterContinental Hotel Cleveland.

The gala benefiting the APL's Second Chance Program will be hosted by WKYC TV-3's Monica Robins. The Second Chance Program provides veterinary care for animals looking for another chance not only to survive, but also to heal and start a new, healthy life with a loving family.

My human Mom had a hysterectomy last week.

After a stay in the hospital, she came home to flowers, cards, all kinds of well wishes and really good pain medication.

I got spayed when I wasn't even 1 years old.

I stayed overnight in a cage.

I came home to little fanfare. I had a shaved belly and stitches hanging from my gutt (ACKKKKKKKKK....cat gutt).

I was up and running around the house the next day.

Humans, a bunch of wusses, except for my Mom, who still has enough energy to pop the lid on the cat food can.

Happy Halloween Tails fundraiser

A benefit for the Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary, "Happy Halloween Tails," is planned for noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 in the auditorium of the Kirtland Community of Christ, 9017 Chillicothe Road, Kirtland.

The family-friendly fundraiser (which is not affiliated with any specific religion) will include pizzas donated and made on-site by Wickliffe-based Wood Fire Catering & Baking, salads, cake, Halloween candy, cider and coffee. Also part of the event will be a silent auction, raffles, a playroom for young children and a room with some cats available for adoption (see below for more information on the cats available).

Tickets purchased by Oct. 24 will be $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 6 to 12, and $5 for children age 5 and younger. After that date, tickets cost $5 more. If space permits, tickets will be available at the door. Donations of cat food, cat litter, etc., brought to the event would be appreciated but are not required.

Happy Tails, based in Chester Township, is a nonprofit cat sanctuary that is currently filled to capacity. The sanctuary has found adoptive homes for numerous cats, but some will spend their lives at Happy Tails because they are unadoptable because of age or disabilities. The sanctuary is recovering from a fire last year, said Jeanne Bones, Happy Tails founder and director. "Happy Halloween Tails" will help the facility provide food, shelter, cat litter, veterinary care and heat in the buildings for the cats.

Black Cat Ball benefits Lake Humane Society

Lake Humane Society is having its third annual Black Cat Ball and Silent Auction from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at LaMalfa Centre, 5783 Heisley Road, Mentor.

Tickets - at $70 each - include a buffet of gourmet food, an open bar and a chance to win a grand prize of $1,500. The event will include music, prizes, costume contests, games, dancing and more.

Being a cat is just about as good as it gets.

But, if I had to be another animal, I would would pick a Canada goose.

Note: Not Canadian goose.

It's never Canadian goose, according to Associated Press style, which I must say some of my fellow bloggers do not adhere to, but that is a topic of another pondering.

But back to the geese. I would love to fly in formation with the flock and HONK.

Of course, I would not fly or honk with them during hunting season. They'd be on their own.

I would poop on golf courses and your back yard.

But, wait a minute, don't people eat geese?

I don't want to be a goose anymore.

In fact, being a cat is all I really want to be.

I may not be able to fly or honk, but I can still poop where I want to.

Didn't read my blog today?

OK, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and just figure the NASA satellite expected to crash into the Earth's atmosphere made a direct hit on your computer.

Today's the day a 6-ton, bus-sized dish is expected to break into hundreds of pieces and tumble toward the planet.

Most of the pieces-parts will disintegrate, but 26 large metal chunks are expected to survive and put the smack down on Earth.

So if one of those hit you and you cannot read this blog, I will understand.

What's that, you weren't planning on reading my ponderings in the first place?

Pedal for Pets fundraiser

Ashtabula County Humane Society's Pedal for Pets annual bike fundraiser will be Sept. 24 on the Western Reserve Greenway Trail, Route 307, Austinburg. This week, the English chap put the final touches on our landscaping, which he calls a garden.

Those Brits have such a way with words.

He planted roses, a tree, shrubs and other nice looking things.

Then he topped it all off with cat mint plants.

A man after my own tastes!

Oh, the smell of cat mint. To roll around in it will be a delight.

Now if I can only figure out how to open the front door.

Being an indoor cat is not all what it's built up to be.

Things I pondered about this week:

* The Tribe's free fall and how I would have made a great center fielder with my speed and leaping abilities. I just could never find a baseball glove to fit my paws.

* My water dish. Why just water? Got milk?

* The big fat gray cat that lives a street over, but hauls his fat butt to my house each day for food. What a gig he has going.

* The neighbor cat, Mischief. The name says it all.

* A room with a view, better known as the upstairs bedroom window that overlooks a bird feeder. Here little birdie....

* The GOP debate. No wait, I would never ponder that.

* Life. It hasn't always been easy. It started on the streets, but now I'm living the American Dream.

* The vacuum cleaner. Something this cat's American Dream could live without.

Legend has it that tabbbies got the "M" on their foreheads from the Virgin Mary.

Legend says that when Baby Jesus was born, a tabby cat kept him warm in the manger.

The Virgin Mary put her mark on the cat’s forehead as a symbol of her gratitude.

Birthday parties at Rescue Village

Did you know you can have your child's birthday party at Geauga Humane Society's Rescue Village?

Parties can be arranged for children ages 6 to 12, and can include a short talk, a tour, possibly puppy or kitty play time, and/or a craft, according to the organization's website.

I can imagine an elementary-school-aged me entirely giddy at the prospect of going to a birthday party at a place like Rescue Village, where I could learn about animals and have the opportunity to play with them. What an awesome idea to get kids interested in and involved with animals.

I know that stupid kid in the movie could see dead people.

Big deal. I can feel earthquakes before they happen.

It's true.

Did I feel the earthquake the other day?

Please, I felt it before the Earth did.

Animals have this sixth sense, or maybe for cats, it's a ninth sense to go along with our nine lives.

Did you know that at the Smithsonian's National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, the day the East Coast was rattled by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake, the red-ruffed lemurs sounded an alarm call about 15 minutes before the quake hit, and then again just as it occurred.

OK, I have no idea what a red-ruffed lemur is, but that is still pretty amazing stuff.

The howler monkeys sounded an alarm call just after the quake. Not as amazing, but hey, it's a howler monkey.

Then, 3 seconds before the quake, a gorilla named Mandara let out a shriek and collected her baby, Kibibi, and moved to the top of a tree structure.

I heard Kibibi's dad never left his recliner. Typical.

So the next time you see your cat acting strange, head for the hills. If your dog is acting that way, well, he's just a dog, so just go about your business.

I know where I'm going now ... for a nap.

Preschool storytime at Rescue Village

The Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village is offering six-week themed preschool story time for children ages 5 and younger and their parents.

The Rescue Village Little Ambassadors will discover, explore and learn about the pets at Rescue Village through stories, songs, dance, games and crafts. They will learn how to properly care for and interact with pets. Subjects covered include colors, counting, number and letter identification, and patterns. Small and large motor skills will be practiced.

The first session runs Sept. 6 through Oct. 13, and the second session runs Oct. 24 through Dec. 8. The fee is $30 per six-week session, and sessions are limited to 10 participants.

Mutt Strut set for Aug. 27 at Penitentiary Glen

Lake Humane Society’s 17th annual Mutt Strut steps off at 10 a.m. Aug. 27 at Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland.
It is the shelter’s annual pledge walk that benefits the homeless, injured and abandoned animals that make their way to the Mentor-based facility. The event is a 1-mile walk people can do with their dogs.
Dogs must be up to date on shots, leashed and friendly with other dogs.
Admission is $15 for adults and children older than 12, and $10 for children 12 and younger.
Admission will be waived for those who raise pledges. Pledge forms can be found on the humane society’s website, www.lakehumane.org.
Participants will receive a goodie bag and Mutt Strut T-shirt.
The event will include vendors selling products and services in the “Mutt Mall.” There will be games, contests, an agility course, a microchip clinic, face painting for children, food and prizes.
There will be dogs from the shelter, information on the humane society’s services and programs, interactive demonstrations and contests.
The event will be held rain or shine.

I know there’s only 24 hours in a day, and for a cat that means 16 for sleeping and eight for eating, grooming, pooping, peeing and pondering.

Thus, Ponderings by Picasso.

Today I ponder why some people don’t like cats.

In the words of Nick Gilbert, son of Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, “What’s not to like?”

Face it, wouldn’t you like to have cat-like speed and our leaping abilities?

What about nine lives?

What about being able to see things in the dark even when they aren’t even there?

What about being worshipped by the ancient Egyptians and being buried in the Great Pyramids ... the Cadilac of final resting places?

What about catnip followed by catnaps?

What’s a matter? Cat got your tongue?

Travel agency AAA has something special in store for "Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA PetBook".

Send AAA your pet's "best-in-travel" moment, and the critter might end up on the cover of next year's AAA PetBook.

From AAA:

Two winning pet photos, chosen in January 2012, will be featured on the cover and spine of the AAA PetBook, published in May 2012. The first place winner, featured on the back cover, will receive $300, a $150 Best Western Travel Card (valid at any Best Western Worldwide), pet treats and five copies of the book. The second place winner, featured on the book's spine, will receive $150, pet treats and two copies of the book.

Cats and Kittens in Need of Homes

If you have an opening in your home and heart, there are several cats and kittens that would love to jump in.

The Public Animal Welfare Society of Ohio is in desperate need of good homes for felines around Northeast Ohio.

Six baby kittens were recently dropped off on the door of an 85-year-old woman in Slavic Village, according to PAWS, which added the kittens were trapped in a box, so the woman called PAWS and they squeezed them into their overburdened foster homes.

In addition, those same foster homes can’t do much more because they are “packed to the brim” with 120 cats already, PAWS said.

The non-profit organization, which is no kill unless an animal is suffering, held an event called “Beat the Heat and Adopt a Cool Cat,” this past weekend where adult cats could be adopted for $10 and kittens under 6 months old for $20.

All felines are spayed/neutered, given shots, tested and wormed, according to PAWS, which has a list of available felines at http://PAWSOhio.org.

PAWS, which found permanent homes for 475 pets in 2010, urges people to adopt before the winter weather hits.

PAWS policy ensures that all animals are spayed or neutered and the potential adopter will be made aware of the animals’ personalities, habits, likes and dislikes in the home environment.

I caught a lot of heat last week for calling my sister cat a rodent.
Chill out, 'Lil Girl. I love rodents. Heck, when I was a stray rodents were my best friends.
I never met one I didn't like or eat. A lot of protein in those critters.
Speaking of eating, I highly doubt I could chew a mouse now. I've lost most of my teeth, but still have what the vet calls "my canines." I almost puked a hairball when I heard that.
Canines? Really? Isn't a canine a dog?
No respectable cat would ever have anything called a canine. I prefer to call them my bottom fangs. Still have some bite in them, too.
All this talk of rodents has made me hungry, but first I need a nap.

PetFix hits 20,000

Depending on context, the number 20,000 could be considered very large or pocket change.

For PetFix Northeast Ohio, it marks a significant feat as it is the number of surgeries performed by PetFix mobile spay/neuter clinic since it hit the road in 2006.

“On Saturday, August 6, Dorothy Culp of Bainbridge (Township) and her daughter, Danielle, pulled into Joe’s Window Shop in Burton and registered their beautiful black cat, Sammy, for surgery, earning her the distinction of the 20,000th pet to be altered by PetFix surgeons,” according to PetFix.

The clinic was sponsored by PetFix Partner Geauga Humane Society as part of their “Fix it in the Farmland” series which brings the PetFix team into the core of Amish country to perform low-cost surgeries for those who cannot afford full fees or transport their pets to private veterinary clinics, the company said.

The 20,000 surgeries prevented the births of 200,000 unwanted puppies and kittens, said PetFix President Timy Sullivan.

“That doesn’t include the thousands and thousands of puppies and kittens those cats and dogs would have produced if allowed to breed throughout their lives,” she said in a statement.

Four to five days a week, the PetFix team, consisting of a licensed veterinarian, registered veterinary technician, and driver/assistant, heads out to a Partner location where they alter anywhere from 17 dogs to 35 cats for low-income owners, feral cat caregivers, and agencies placing cats and dogs for adoption.

In Culp’s case, the family inherited two barn cats when they moved to their Bainbridge farm, Culp said, adding she was happy to care for the cats but dismayed when soon after, one had a litter of four and the other produced a litter of nine.

“Before I knew it, I had 15 cats,” she said, adding the Geauga Humane Society and PetFix then had them altered.

“I had everything under control until Sammy showed up,” she said, referring to the cat that came onto her property and had a litter of three.

All three are scheduled for an upcoming PetFix clinic.

Surgery fees range from $30 for a cat neuter to $70 for a large dog spay. All animals not previously inoculated receive a $6 rabies shot and free-roaming cats receive basic vaccines for $4. The fees cover only about 60% of the costs associated with providing the service and PetFix raises the difference through grants, individual donations and fundraising events.

The organization’s largest fundraising event is coming up on Saturday, October 15 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum for “Fix, Rattle & Roll,” PetFix said, adding it includes food, exhibit tours, dancing and an auction.

“Our goal is simply to create a region in which every cat and dog born has a loving home by reducing the number of animals born to a number we can care for,” Sullivan said. “And with the support of our generous donors and the cooperation of our dedicated partners, we are getting closer every day.”

Deacon needs a home

This is Deacon, 1 1⁄2 year-old male who came to Lake Humane Society in March as a stray.

According to shelter officials, Deacon loves to hang out and take naps.
