Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village is part of the only team in Ohio to compete in the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals 100K National Challenge.

GHS is partnered with Lake Humane Society and with a goal of completing 300 or more adoptions than within the same time period in 2009.

Fifty shelters are competing in this national challenge and the winning shelter(s) will receive $100,000. There is also a $25,000 prize for the shelter that best engages their community.

The 100K Shelter Challenge will take place Sunday through Oct. 31.

Spot is available for adoption through Western Reserve Humane Society.

According to shelter officials, Spot is a very shy cat who needs reassurance of a patient, loving home, perhaps with older children.

He is about 2 1/2 years old and was rescued from the outdoors.

The black-and-white short-haired cat is neutered.

The national heat wave is affecting pets as well as humans.

Tips from the Geauga Humane Society include not taking pets along on shopping trips.
The temperature in a parked car can reach up to 150 degrees in a short time.

This type of heat could kill a pet. Be sure that pets have shade and plenty of water. If a pet becomes sick, seek treatment from a veterinarian immediately.

Talk about a deal.

The Cleveland APL is lowering its adoption fees for cats July 23 to 25.

On those days, cats will be available for $10, kittens 5 months and younger will be available for $20.

Regular adoption fees are $95 for kittens, $45 for adult cats and $30 for senior cats.

As an added bonus, the first 20 adopters (cats and dogs) will receive two free passes to the advanced screening of "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore."

All animals are spayed or neutered, tested for heartworm or FELV/FIV, have received age-appropriate vaccinations and treatment for worms and fleas, and come with a collar and APL ID Tag, helpful species-specific animal care information, and free initial veterinary exam.

Cats/kittens come with a travel box, and dogs/puppy adoptions include a leash.

The Geauga County Dog Warden office is in need of help in treating Poptart, a Labrador-Newfoundland mix.

Shelter officials say Poptart is a great dog but has heartworm.

She is being treated for it, but the shelter needs help paying for her medical treatment.

TOLEDO — An Ohio dog warden says a German shepherd named Sarge is one tough pup after surviving six gunshots to his head, neck and chest.

Witnesses tell police in Toledo that the dog’s owner and another man took turns shooting the dog with a pistol while he howled in his cage.

Lucas County dog warden Julie Lyle says the bullets remain lodged inside Sarge but that he needs only painkillers and antibiotics.

She says the dog was up, around, eating and drinking Tuesday.

Caroline’s Kids Pet Rescue’s cat sanctuary is in need of cleaning supplies and cat food.

The sanctuary, located at 7394 Morley Road in Concord Township, is home to 220 cats.
It is in need of everyday cleaning supplies such as bleach, laundry detergent, Fantasik, 409, Clorox wipes, dryer sheets, dishwashing liquid, paper towels, and 13-33 gallon trash can liners.

The food cupboard is in need of donations, as well. The felines eat dry and canned food.

Also, scoopable litter is on the sanctuary’s wish list.

Items can be dropped off from 7 a.m.. to 4 p.m. daily.

Also, adoption hours are noon to 4 p.m. on Fridays or by appointment.
