Ponderings by Picasso

Sure signs that spring is right around the corner:
1. The Canada geese have returned to nest in the backyard.
2. Birds are tweeting (not on Twitter) outside the window.
3. The Indians have reported to spring training.
4. I'm shedding my winter coat.
5. I've hacked up hairballs the last three days.
What a great time of the year.

Lonely Hearts

The Geauga Humane Society's Rescue Village has some lonely hearts that are looking for love.

Members of the Lonely Hearts are animals that might be a little older, bigger or have been waiting for their forever match a little longer.

If you adopt a Lonely Hearts member from Rescue Village in February, you will receive a discount on the price and also walk away with a gift basket.

Adopt a Lonely Hearts cat for $25 or a Lonely Hearts dog for $50.

For more details, call the shelter, located at 15463 Chillothe Road in Russell Township, at 440-338-4819, ext. 10.

Ponderings by Picasso

If you're a stray cat in the Cleveland to Willowick area, your life was probably graced by Dorothy Max at some point.

The Euclid resident was the ultimate "Crazy Cat Lady," feeding an unknown number of strays and ferals throughout the years.

The 81-year-old died Thursday at 81, but leaves a legacy of one being one humane human.

Nothing stopped Dorothy  -- not snow, rain or even drug dealers, who got so used to her in the rough East Cleveland neighborhoods, they often helped her carry the cat food bags.

Life on the streets isn't pretty for strays, but Dorothy Max made it liveable for so many.

As a former stray myself, here's a thank-you to Dorothy.

Earth's loss is heaven's gain.

Animal Crackers: Penguin fetching a newspaper

As if all of us didn't want a penguin already, this video should seal the deal. Thanks to Rachel Jackson for sharing.

Things that tick me off besides ticks and fleas:

Channel 19. You know, honest, fair and everywhere.

Have you seen the TV channel's Puppet's Court?

They can't have a reporter inside the courtroom during the Jimmy Dimora trial so they use puppets to re-enact the day's proceedings.

And, what do they use as their commentator puppet?

A cat? A dog?

No. A squirrel.

Really?

A squirrel? A member of the rodent family?

I smell a rat here and it's not just Dimora.

That's a lot of dogs

The Geauga County Dog Warden shelter cares for more than 700 dogs each year.

That's a lot of mouths to feed and a lot to clean up after.

The shelter is in need of laundry detergent as well as peanut butter (to hide pills in) and low-residue dog food (canned food).

If you can donate, drop off items at the shelter, 12513 Merritt Road in Chardon, or call 440-286-8135.

You can also send a monetary donation to the address mentioned above.

Fido, or in this case, Fidos, can use your help.

Ponderings by Picasso

Rodent
So the rodent saw his shadow and now we're going to have six more weeks of winter.

Big deal.

From what I can see from my cozy perch on the window inside the balmy 75-degree livingroom where I spend much of my day, we haven't had much of a winter at all.

I really think the reason Punxsutawney Phil came out and ran back so fast is he finally caught of glimpse of what he looks like.

That is one ugly, dude.

Animal Crackers: Groundhog eating an ice cream cone

In honor of Groundhog Day tomorrow, here's a groundhog who just loves this ice cream come (but then again, who wouldn't love an ice cream cone?).
